Saint Sadrill
It may not be an easy listen, but damn, it’s utterly rewarding. Pierrefilant is the new album by French experimental band Saint Sadrill, which comes courtesy of the outstanding Lyon-based label Dur Et Doux. Get lost in the imaginative soundscapes and captivating vocal performance.
Everything is noise
New musical ideas keep coming and refreshing themselves, up until the very last moments of the twenty-minute finale, “Happy Humans”. Pierrefilant might just be one of the best albums of the year.
Can this even be called music
Saint Sadrill is the name of the pop goldsmiths at the helm of Antoine Mermet, a discreet but hyperactive biped whose second group album, Frater Crater, comes after six years of silence. The spirits of James Blake and Mark Hollis seem to be summoned to a banquet organised by Scott Walker and St Vincent. Call it avant-pop, emo indie or lo-fi chamber music with an experimental twist.
Frater Crater is thus the follow-up to Pierrefilant, a debut group album recorded in 48 hours and released in 2018, which had followed the release of Building Lampshades, a solo synth pop EP in the form of a sketchbook, released in 2016. It is carried by a tight band, neither chamber ensemble nor rock band, or all of the above. It features key musicians from Lyon’s innovative music scene, all of whom have in common a preference for creativity over rule-following.
FRATER CRATER will be released on September 13.
